Thimble 37 - Salaam... Peace

...
Today is Eid ul Fitr. From the BBC page on religions:

The festival (Eid) begins when the first sight of the new moon is seen in the sky.

There are special services out of doors and in Mosques, processions through the streets, and of course, a special celebratory meal - eaten during daytime, the first daytime meal Muslims will have had in a month.

Muslims are not only celebrating the end of fasting, but thanking Allah for the help and strength that he gave them throughout the previous month to help them practise self-control.

Eid is also a time of forgiveness, and making amends.

For today my choice of Peace graphic is a multi-language and multi-faith Peace symbol made up of the words for Peace in three languages - Salaam (Arabic), Shalom (Hebrew) and Peace (English)

Thimble 34 - Mantram

...

The sons of men are one
and I am one with them.
I seek to love not hate.
I seek to serve and not exact due service.
I seek to heal not hurt.

Let pain bring due reward of light and love.
Let the soul control the outer form
and life and all events,
and bring to light the love which underlies
the happenings of the time.

Let vision come and insight;
let the future stand revealed.
Let inner union demonstrate
and outer cleavages be gone.

Let love prevail.

Let all men love.

Thimble 27 - Tolerance

...

O Thou God of all beings, of all worlds, and of all times,
We pray, that the little differences in our clothes,
in our inadequate languages,
in our ridiculous customs,
in our imperfect laws,
in our illogical opinions,
in our ranks and conditions which
are so disproportionately important to us
and so meaningless to you,
that these small variations
that distinguish those atoms that we call men,
one from another,
may not be signals of hatred and persecution.

Thimble 24 - Two Wolves

...

The Wolves Within…

An old Grandfather said to his grandson, who came to him with anger at a friend who had done him an injustice…

“Let me tell you a story. I too, at times, have felt great hate for those who have taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do. But hate wears you down, and does not hurt your enemy. It’s like taking poison and wishing your enemy would die.”

“I have struggled with these feelings many times. It is as if there are two wolves inside me; one is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fight when it is right to do so, and in the right way.

But…the other wolf… ah! The littlest thing will send him into a fit of temper. He fights everyone, all of the time, for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is helpless anger, for his anger will change nothing.”

“Sometimes it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit.”

The boy looked intently into his Grandfather’s eyes and asked, “Which one wins, Grandfather?”

The Grandfather smiled and quietly said, “The one I feed.”

Thimble 21 - Notes of Peace

From Yahoo News

Messages of peace

Hundreds of people covered a boarded up window of a Poundland store in Peckham, south London, with notes of peace. The wall bore a resemblance to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem as hordes of positive messages appeared on the board after the worst night of violence on Monday calling for peace and tolerance in the capital.

Left-handed Thimble 19

...
The 13th of August is International Left-Handers Day. Since I'm left-handed myself I thought this would be nice to use as a theme for Peace thimble 83. :-)

All the quotes below are from famous left-handers.

When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.

Jimi Hendrix

A time will come when a politician who has willfully made war and promoted international dissension will be as sure of the dock and much surer of the noose than a private homicide. It is not reasonable that those who gamble with men's lives should not stake their own.

H. G. Wells

I do not want the peace which passeth understanding, I want the understanding which bringeth peace.

Helen Keller

I think it's very important that you make your own decision about what you are. Therefore you're responsible for your actions, so you don't blame other people.

Prince William

A man is truly ethical only when he obeys the compulsion to help all life which he is able to assist, and shrinks from injuring anything that lives.

Albert Schweitzer

But what we can do, as flawed as we are, is still see God in other people, and do our best to help them find their own grace. That's what I strive to do, that's what I pray to do every day.

Barack Obama

A people free to choose will always choose peace.

Ronald Reagan

My hope still is to leave the world a bit better than when I got here.

Jim Henson

Life's like a movie, write your own ending. Keep believing, keep pretending.

Hidden in the forest...

What lies at the end of the road?

An unnatural border marks the edge between land and sea...

Tank blocks.

Old reminders of a different time,
when fear of invasion overwhelmed this coastline
and bombs dropped from darker skies.

Now the anti-aircraft guns are gone
and the buildings are nothing more
than bare bones

and ghosts.

Thimble 8 - Send Thy peace...

..
A prayer for Peace from World Prayers

Send Thy peace O Lord, which is
perfect and everlasting,
that our souls may radiate peace.

Send Thy peace O Lord, that we
may think, act and speak harmoniously.

Send Thy peace O Lord, that we
may be contented and thankful for
Thy bountiful gifts.

Send Thy peace O Lord, that amidst
our worldly strife, we may enjoy Thy bliss.

Send Thy peace O Lord, that we
may endure all, tolerate all, in the thought of
Thy grace and mercy.

Send Thy peace O Lord, that our lives
may become a Divine vision and in Thy light,
all darkness may vanish.

Send Thy peace O Lord, our Father and Mother,
that we Thy children on Earth may all
unite in one family.

Can one everyday person really make a difference and change the world? Isn't that a bit like trying to empty the ocean with a thimble?

Maybe... but what if you got everyone to help you?
What if we bailed with a billion thimbles?

These are my Thimblefuls for Peace... I hope they make you think.
